Perth Choral Society Director of Music

Peter Rutterford

Peter Rutterford joined the Perth Choral Society as Director of Music late in 2004 and took charge of his inaugural concert in March 2005 when the choir performed the Mozart Mass in C Major (Coronation Mass and the Mozart Requiem).

Peter was born in Cambridgeshire and began his musical education at the age of nine, studying the cornet in his local brass band.  He joined the Royal Marines Band Service in 1964, studying the violin, trumpet and cornet and embarking on a musical career spanning thirty-six years. During his distinguished career, Peter travelled extensively throughout the world and has taken part in many occasions both at home and abroad.

In 1999 Peter retired from the Royal Marines in the rank of Major, whereupon he became Director of Music for the Sultan of Oman’s Royal Navy for the next two years. On completion, Peter returned to Perthshire, where he lives with his wife Janet.

Throughout his career, Peter has been associated with many different musical organisations and has regularly been asked to conduct and adjudicate orchestras, bands, choral groups and musical societies throughout the country.

Peter studied at Goldsmiths’ College, London with the composer Edward Gregson.  He is a Master of Music, a Bachelor of Arts, a Licentiate of the Royal Academy of Music and an Associate of the Royal College of Music.  He is delighted to be associated with Perth Choral Society as their Director of Music and looks forward to a long and happy tenure.
