Her Majesty's Royal Marines Scotland and Perth Choral Society Concert 2008
On October 8th 2008, Perth Concert Hall was definitely the place to be - a packed hall was the venue for the concert given by the band of Her Majesty's Royal Marines Scotland and Perth Choral Society!
One rehearsal (at 6pm on the day of the concert!) with the band and on stage at 7.30pm for an exciting evening of music. After the National Anthem, Captain Jon Ridley set the scene with a Fanfare by Verdi, with audience participation. The Corps of Drums then made their stunning entrance, then a March and Wagner's Rienzi overture followed. Our first item was O Fortuna, from Orff's Carmina Burana, then we delighted the huge audience with a Richard Rodgers Medley. A fabulous piece called the Sword and the Crown was the next item - complete with off-stage trumpets and singing(!) by band members; the percussion section really shone in this piece, with a fascinating duel between two timpani players and the rest of the section!
After the interval, two band items preceded our next contribution which began with Handel's famous Coronation Anthem "Zadok the Priest" and, in directly contrasting mood, Bach's gentle "Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring." Our next piece was probably the highlight of our part in the concert - the Battle Hymn of the Republic, which clearly thrilled the capacity audience, who demanded an encore!
A rousing Post Horn Gallop took us to the Finale, with the choir joining the band for Wagner's Pilgrims' Chorus from Tannhauser; the well loved Psalm 23 was sung to Crimond, then Sunset and Rule Britannia ended that part of the proceedings.
The fitting farewell comprised an arrangement of "We're no' awa' tae bide awa", the March Past Heart of Oak and finally
the Regimental March "A Life on the Ocean Wave " brought the concert to a stunning close.
What a privilege it is for Perth Choral Society to sing with this great band - and we're invited to do it again next year!
Watch the local press for details - and don't miss it!
