King Robert The Bruce

On Sunday 26th March 2006, a very special event took place in St. John's Kirk, Perth - and Perth Choral Society was there!  What was this special event?  A service of commemoration to mark the 700th anniversary of the enthronement of King Robert the Bruce at what was then Scone Abbey (now Scone Palace).  The day began with a procession through Perth, led by Lord Elgin's son, James, carrying the great broadsword of King Robert, to the Kirk.  Lord Elgin, the current Chief of the Bruce family, led the celebrations which were attended by Bruces from Australia, Canada, the US and the UK. Well-wishers included the Queen, who sent a personal message to Lord Elgin.

The service was quite  stunning, with superb music and great hymns - and members of Perth Choral Society were privileged to have a leading part in the proceedings.  After singing the Introit - Rutter's Gaelic Blessing - the choir processed down the side aisle and up the centre aisle singing the wonderful Vaughan Williams arrangement of Psalm 100; Mr. D. Eoin Bennet, Master of the Music and organist of St. John's Kirk, together with four trumpeters from 51st Highland Division, led the fanfare which opens this hymn. Mr. Bennet also wrote fanfares for two other hymns - "All Glory, Laud and Honour" and the well-known "St. George's Edinburgh" which were played by the trumpeters and the whole sound of trumpets, organ and voices was wonderful! Prior to the service, the Scottish Fiddle Orchestra played some lovely Scottish airs and during the prayers, there was very moving clarsach music played by students from St. Mary's Music School, Edinburgh. Perth Choral Society members were complimented by very many people from all over the world for their part in the service, in which they joined the choir of St. John's Kirk.  The profile of the Society was certainly lifted by their participation in that very special event and we sre already looking forward to our next appearance at St. John's Kirk on Sunday 21st May when we sing at the Perth festival of the Arts Dedication Service.
