Susan Boyd Mezzo- Soprano

Susan is from Northern Ireland and is currently in her second year of the opera course at the RSAMD.  Prior to this she studies at the RNCM for five years. She has been under the tutelage of Peter Wilson for the duration of this time.

Highlights of Susan’s performances include the role of ‘Dido’ in Purcell’s, Dido and Aeneas, (RNCM), ‘La Suore Zelatrice’ in Puccini’s Suor Angelica, (RNCM), ‘Tisbe’ in Rossini’s, La Cenerentola, (RNCM and the Ryedale Festival), Title role in Gilbert and Sullivan’s Iolanthe and @Porporina’ in Gassman’s L’Opera Seria (Batignano festival, Italy).  Susan undertook the title role in Massenet’s Cendrillion for the RSAMD (2006) performing with Scottish Opera Orchestra at Glasgow’s Theatre Royal and the Edinburgh Festival Theatre.  Susan also played the role of the ‘Stewardess’ in the RSAMD’s production of Flight, June 2006. Most recently Susan performed the role of ‘Conception’ in Ravel’s comic opera L’Heure Espagnole, again with the orchestra of Scottish Opera Orchestra at the Theatre Royal and Edinburgh E.F.T.

Susan is equally comfortable on the concert and oratorio platform. In April 2005 she was selected as a finalist in the 11th Belfast Classical Music Bursaries competition at the Belfast Waterfront Hall, winning the Ireland Funds Award and the Audience Prize.  She has also performed in concert with the RSNO, and in May 2006 was delighted to give a BBC lunch time recital in Belfast. In August 2006 Susan was involved in the Edinburgh Festival, singing one of the Leherbube in Wagner’s Die Meistersinger at the Usher Hall.  Other concert engagements include two performances of Elgar’s Sea Pictures, with the Kelvin Ensemble and Edinburgh Chamber Orchestra in Glasgow and Edinburgh, February 2007, and an Elgar Apostles at Durham Cathedral, March 2007.

Susan’s studies have been most generously supported by the RSAMD Trust Fund and she is very grateful for their generous support this year.
